ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, "Coco" forever changed a woman's style in the 20th century by designing clothing, memorable perfumes, and timeless handbags. After her mother passed away when she was six years old, Gabrielle was sent to the orphanage of the Catholic monastery of Aubazine, where she learned the trade of a seamstress. During her brief time singing in cafes and concert halls, Gabrielle was given the nickname "Coco" by the local soldiers who would attend her shows. During World War I, Coco became the mistress of a rich ex-military officer and textile heir named Etienne Balsan. To fill time while living in his chateau, she would design and create hats, which eventually turned into a commercial venture. Her next relationship with Arthur Edward Capel allowed her to install her first shop in her apartment followed by boutiques in Deauville, Biarritz. By the 1920s, Chanel became the first designer to create loose woman's jerseys instilling a relaxed style for woman whom were traditionally stuffed in corsets. A true innovator in the fashion industry, Chanel continued to change the world of design well into her retirement, especially with the introduction of her most renowned handbag: The Chanel 2.55.
